PDO Threads

Polydioxanone (PDO) threads are synthetic, bio-absorbable surgical sutures designed to combat aging, sagging skin.

Molded Helical Barb Thread

These threads that have been used in cardiothoracic surgery, are among the safest implantable medical devices available. PDO threads come in two types: barbed and smooth. Barbed threads have tiny barbs in a 360° pattern that grip the skin, providing strong anchoring and support when lifting and repositioning loose skin. Smooth threads, on the other hand, are best used on crepey, wrinkled skin as they help induce collagen production, softening the appearance of these areas.

Clinical studies have shown that PDO threads improve facial laxity by lifting the tissue in an upward direction. As the polydioxanone biodegrades over 6-8 months, the body stimulates collagen production through a process called “neocollagenesis,” aiding in anti-aging for the following year.

What does the PDO thread process look like?

How does a PDO thread lift work?

The PDO thread process is surprisingly simple! First, the area is numbed with a small amount of lidocaine. A tiny insertion point is then made for the thread to be inserted. Once placed, the skin is gently pulled over the thread, locking the lift into place. You may feel some tightness immediately after the procedure, but this will ease in the days following treatment.

PDO threads are inserted under the skin, where they act as a scaffold lifting sagging facial tissue in an upward vector.

How long do PDO threads last?

As an absorbable material, polydioxanone is broken down by the body over 6-8 months. Collagen production continues for up to 12 months after thread placement. For best results, we recommend annual thread placement, with patients with more mature skin possibly requiring treatment twice per year.
